The sight of these doughnuts was so exciting we ate both of the birthday cake doughnut holes before this picture could be taken. They were glorious. The doughnuts themselves were light and airy, and the glazes were sweet sugary perfection. Note that this place is seriously tiny on the inside. There is really only room inside for the counter and antique cash register. The only seating is outside, so if the weather is acting up (as it so often is in Chicago) plan on taking these doughnuts to go.
Sometimes after a night out all you really need is coffee and doughnuts. If you are looking for some of the best doughnuts in Chicago look no further than The Doughnut Vault on the corner of Franklin and Kinzie. This gem opens at 8:00 a.m. Monday-Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. They make all the doughnuts in the morning and stay open until they sell out, and sell out they do. We arrived just before 10:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning to find that the line was already down the block. After waiting for a little over a half hour, they were already sold out of the seasonal jelly which was disappointing. But we did get to try the buttermilk old fashioned, the chestnut, vanilla and chocolate glazed and two of the birthday cake doughnut holes.
